HH44 Ocean Cruiser Review: Redefining Performance Cruising Catamarans

A Glimpse into the Future of Sailing

Imagine stepping aboard a catamaran that feels less like a traditional sailboat and more like a Tesla of the seas. That's the HH44 Ocean Cruiser for you – a boat that's not just pushing the boundaries of sailing technology, but redefining them entirely. At the Cannes Yachting Festival I was lucky enough to get a private boat tour by Seth (Chairman HH Catamarans and former legendary The Sailing Family YouTuber). As I looked at the sleek carbon fiber construction an listened to Seth's razor sharp sales arguments, I couldn't help but feel I was aboard the future of cruising catamarans.

Introduction: The HH Legacy Meets Compact Innovation

HH Catamarans has long been synonymous with high-performance, luxury multihulls. Their latest offering, the HH44OC, brings that legacy of innovation to a more manageable 44-foot package. It's a boat that promises to deliver the exhilarating sailing experience of its larger siblings without sacrificing comfort or ease of handling. In our Sail Performance index it scores a solid 80% with both Bruce Number and Kelsall and all ratios landing nicely in the Performance category.

From the moment you step aboard, it's clear that this is no ordinary cruising catamaran. The HH44OC is a testament to what happens when cutting-edge technology meets masterful design. It's a boat that's equally at home crossing oceans as it is entertaining friends in a secluded anchorage.

Key Features: Where Innovation Meets the Sea

Carbon Fiber Marvel

The HH44OC's carbon fiber construction is more than just a talking point – it's the foundation of this boat's remarkable performance. Stepping aboard, you immediately notice how solid and quiet the boat feels, a testament to the rigidity of its structure. This lightweight yet incredibly strong material allows for a boat that's both fast and stable, a combination that's often elusive in the world of cruising catamarans.

EcoDrive: Sailing into a Greener Future

Perhaps the most exciting feature of the HH44OC is its EcoDrive hybrid propulsion system. It's not just an add-on; the entire boat was designed around this innovative system. As I engaged the electric motors, the silence was almost eerie – no rumble of diesel engines, just the gentle lapping of waves against the hull. The ability to motor silently in and out of anchorages or marinas is not just a luxury, it's a game-changer for the cruising experience.

Solar Integration: Harnessing the Sun

The boat's 4.2kW solar array isn't just an afterthought – it's seamlessly integrated into the design. Covering the entire hardtop, these panels provide a substantial amount of power, feeding the boat's electrical systems and batteries. During my test sail, I was impressed by how quickly the batteries recharged, even on a partly cloudy day.

Innovative Helm Design

The rotating helm stations on the HH44OC are a stroke of genius. I found myself easily switching between an outboard position for clear visibility while sailing, and an inboard, protected position when the weather turned. This flexibility not only enhances the sailing experience but also adds an extra layer of safety and comfort.

Folding Transoms: Safety Meets Versatility

The folding transoms are another feature that sets the HH44OC apart. When raised, they create a secure cockpit, perfect for offshore passages. Lowered, they transform into generous swim platforms, creating an even more spacious feel to the already roomy cockpit. It's a feature that seamlessly bridges the gap between serious bluewater cruiser and comfortable day sailor.

Rig and Sails: Powered for Performance

The HH44OC comes standard with an aluminum mast, though a carbon upgrade is available for those seeking ultimate performance. The sail plan is well-thought-out, with a self-tacking jib that makes short-handed sailing a breeze. During our test sail, I was impressed by how easily the boat handled, even when the wind picked up.

Deck and Exterior: Form Meets Function

Moving around the deck, the attention to detail is evident. The uncluttered side decks, made possible by clever under-deck line routing, provide safe and easy movement even in rough conditions. The cockpit layout is both spacious and practical, with plenty of seating for entertaining or relaxing at anchor.

Interior: A Home Away From Home

Stepping below deck, the HH44OC continues to impress. The saloon is flooded with natural light thanks to large windows, creating an airy and open feel. The galley is well-equipped and positioned to serve both the interior and cockpit easily. Cabin layouts are customizable, but the standard configuration offers a luxurious owner's suite and two guest cabins, all finished to a high standard.

Power and Systems: The Heart of Innovation

The EcoDrive system is more than just electric motors. It's a fully integrated hybrid system that allows for electric propulsion, diesel backup, and even hydrogeneration while sailing. The large battery bank, coupled with the extensive solar array, means you can spend extended periods at anchor without relying on shore power or running a generator.

Performance: Speed Meets Comfort

Out on the water, the HH44OC truly comes into its own. In 15 knots of wind, we easily achieved 9 knots of boat speed upwind, with the boat feeling stable and responsive. Off the wind, with the Code 0 unfurled, we saw speeds in excess of 12 knots, all while maintaining a comfortable ride.

The mini keels, standard on the OC version, provide good upwind performance and stability without the complexity of daggerboards. For those seeking ultimate performance, the SC (Sports Cruising) version with daggerboards is available.

Comparison: Standing Out in a Crowded Field

When compared to other boats in its class, like the Outremer 45 or the Balance 442, the HH44OC stands out for its advanced hybrid propulsion system and carbon fiber construction. While these competitors offer excellent performance in their own right, the HH44OC's innovative features and build quality put it in a class of its own.

Quality and Construction: Built to Last

HH Catamarans' reputation for quality is evident in every aspect of the HH44OC. Built in state-of-the-art facilities, the boat undergoes rigorous quality control throughout the construction process. The use of carbon fiber and advanced composites not only enhances performance but also ensures longevity and durability. However, for those seeking a boat that can truly do it all – from thrilling day sails to long-distance cruising, all with a minimal environmental footprint – our review of the HH44 Ocean Cruiser shows that it's hard to beat.

With a base price starting at around $947,000, it's an investment in the future of sailing. But for the right buyer, it's an investment that promises to deliver years of high-performance, comfortable, and environmentally conscious cruising.

Who Sails This Catamaran?

The HH44OC appeals to a diverse range of sailors. It's perfect for the experienced sailor looking to step up to a high-performance multihull without the challenges of managing a larger yacht. It's also attracting a new breed of sailor – tech-savvy individuals who appreciate the boat's innovative systems and eco-friendly design. Even the legendary sailboat reviewer Toby Hodges over at Yachting World was super excited when he test sailed the HH44.

One owner, a Silicon Valley executive, described it as "the perfect blend of performance and livability," while a retired couple praised its ease of handling, allowing them to confidently sail short-handed on extended cruises.

As I reluctantly stepped off the HH44OC after our tour, I couldn't help but feel I had experienced something special. This isn't just a new model; it's a glimpse into the future of cruising catamarans. For those ready to embrace that future, the HH44OC offers an unparalleled sailing experience that's as thrilling as it is comfortable.
